Newborn photography is a delicate art that requires patience, skill, and a whole lot of love. It's about capturing the fleeting moments of a baby's first days, those precious details that change so quickly.
What Makes Newborn Photography Unique?
- Safety First: Newborn safety is paramount. You want to make sure the photographer you choose, is properly trained to handle babies with the utmost care, and ensure they are always comfortable and secure.
- Posing and Props: Along with being able to safely pose a baby on a table or beanbag, they also need to be able to safely pose a baby in a variety of props. Many photographers who specialize in newborn photography, offer many different props to choose from. These may include baskets, buckets, bowls, beds, etc.
- Capturing Details: You don't just want pictures of your baby. You can take those on your phone. What you want from a professional newborn photography session, is a gallery that is going to highlight all of the delicate features of your beautiful little baby. We take the time to capture their fine silky hair, down to their tiny, perfect toes.
- Capturing Emotions: When looking through a photographer's portfolio, you want to see connection. The love between you and your baby, your family together, and the unique relationship between siblings.
Tips for Choosing a Newborn Photographer:
- Look for experience: You want to see things like how long they have been photographing babies, their training, a varied portfolio, and client testimonials. These things show that they have the skills and disposition to patiently handle a newborn with confidence and care.
- Read reviews: See what other clients have to say about their experience with the photographer. Testimonials are great, but also check their Google and Facebook reviews. Public reviews are a great way to find information from previous clients about their experiences with a photographer. A strong Google business listing is also a sign that your photographer is skilled and trustworthy.
- Chat with the photographer: Schedule a consultation to discuss your vision and ask any questions you may have. This can be over the phone, or via email. Make sure the vibes are good, so that you feel heard and respected throughout your session(s).
- Book early: Newborn sessions are best done within the first few weeks of life. Book your session while you are still pregnant to ensure your preferred photographer's availability. If baby is already born, don't fret, but do reach out asap to make sure you can get photos while baby is still tiny and sleepy.
What to Expect During a Newborn Session:
- Expect flexibility: Newborn sessions are often unpredictable. Babies have their own schedules, and the photographer will work around their cues. I often tell parents that I work with what babies give me, and sometimes that goes exactly as I plan, and sometimes we change course for what baby is willing to do.
- Bring essentials: Pack a diaper bag with essentials like diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes. Also bring the items necessary to feed the baby, more than you expect. A hungry baby is not going to tolerate spending several hours with a stranger. If your baby takes a pacifier (my kids did not), make sure to bring it. A professional newborn photographer will have all the decorative things, so you only need to bring the things you need to keep baby clean and fed.
- Relax and enjoy: Try to relax and enjoy this special time with your baby. The photographer will guide you through the session. Skilled photographers will be able to pose you and your baby in a way that looks beautiful and highlights your best features.
Newborn photography is an investment in memories. It's a way to preserve the fleeting moments of your baby's early days and create beautiful keepsakes that will be cherished for years to come.
